JukesEdwards A Study in Education and Heredity A E Winship Books
I thought it was a book about the differences between the Jukes and the Edwards because of education. It turned out to be a history of whos who in the Edwards family. I got very tired of reading how many doctors, lawyers, preachers and educators there were in the Edwards family and virtually nothing about the Jukes at all. There was less that two chapters about the Jukes and all the rest of the book talked about the Edwards. I did not enjoy this book at all.Product details

JukesEdwards A Study in Education and Heredity A E Winship Books Reviews
A.E. Winship wrote about the human will through the lives of two men well known for the lives they led. Each man represented the extremes of life decisions and how their free will choices effected their children and subsequent generations. (Today, a materialist may misunderstand this book to be of science or represent the processes attributed to evolution.) Additionally, two philosophies are contrasted, since Jukes was an existentialist and Edwards a Christian. As an example of the choices, Jonathan Edwards wrote resolutions for his life, such as
- Resolved, to do whatever I think to be my duty, and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general.
- Resolved, so to do, whatever difficulties I meet with, how many soever, and how great soever.
- Resolved, to be continually endeavoring to find out some new contrivance and invention to promote the forementioned things.
- Resolved, never to lose one moment of time, but to improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can.
- Resolved, to live with all my might while I do live.
- Resolved, to be endeavoring to find out fit objects of charity and liberality.
- Resolved, never to do anything out of revenge.
- Resolved, never to suffer the least motions of anger towards irrational beings.
- Resolved, never to speak evil of any one, so that it shall tend to his dishonor, more or less, upon no account except for some real good.
- Resolved, to maintain the strictest temperance in eating and drinking.
Through this book, we see the consequences of the choices these men made and better understand consequences in life.
What an interesting book. Love ordering books for my kindle on . It is so quick and easy and so fast
It is a good read and the price is unbeatable.
In the 19th Century scientists and social activists tried to identify the underlying causes of mental illness, poverty, homelessness and criminal behavior. In time Edwards and others became convinced that "bad blood," that is, poor heredity, was the controlling factor in these problems. The answer they believed was in identifying those people who were "defective," and, wherever possible, discouraging or preventing them from having children. The Eugenics movement, as this early pseudo-science became known, became vastly popular. While obstensibly promoting the goal of encouraging people with "good heredity" to marry and have "better babies," in fact eugenics promoters often eliminated "bad blood" through forced sterilization and institutionalization. The 1927 Supreme Court decision in Buck v. Bell used eugenics as a basis for requiring sterlization of a woman viewed as "defective." State laws allowing such sterilizations existed until the 1960's. This book takes you back to the beginning, when, using hearsay and slipshod records and examinations, eugenicists created the idea of a super-race (although they didn't call it that) that provided Hitler with "scientific proof" of the inferiority of non-Aryan races.
The contrast between these two families serves as an excellent illustration. It is a good book that I highly recommend.
A story with reading.
