BAD CHURCH GOOD CHURCHA MEMOIR OF A FORMER CATHOLIC PRIEST is not a theological treatise. It is the story of a man who grew up at the beginning of the Great Depression in a poor Irish-Catholic neighborhood in Philadelphia, became a priest and left the priesthood and the church. The memoir begins with a realization that there are two Catholic churches, one the imperial, authoritarian, male-dominated and intolerant church. The other is the church of the people. The first is dominated by tiaras, thrones, rings to be kissed, royal robes, infallible pronouncements and secret inquisitions. The other is characterized by soup kitchens, mercy hospitals, nuns and priests living in poverty, pantries for the poor, Catholic charities collections, and the faithful gathering in church halls to distribute alms. After this introduction, the story takes the reader through Kane's long life of obedience, regular church attendance to entrance into the seminary and eventual ordination to the priesthood. Through 10 years as a priest, the author struggled with the authoritarian, man-made laws and pronouncements of an impersonal church leadership remote from the plight of the people. Kane began to realizes that those power-hungry leaders had only one aim in mind - the preservation of the church above all else. The current sexual scandals of the clergy, the pope and bishop's intolerance of the most heinous acts are but the latest indication of this attitude.
Bad Church Good Church A Memoir of a Former Catholic Priest Tom Kane 9781450708777 Books
Tom Kane, for many years a Catholic Priest and now a working journalist, has written this most readable, candid account of what led him to serve the Church faithfully for many years and what finally led him away from the priesthood. In telling his own life experiences, he is able to provide what amounts to a brilliant critique of the Church in the present age, revealing in understandable terms what aspects of Catholicism continue to work and serve humanity and which ones have failed to remain true to their intended purposes.Tom begins with the people and community that led him to choose the priest's path. He brings the reader with him to Rome where he sees what the power and glory of the hierarchy have become after so many centuries. His later experiences of reaching out, finding love, and suffering great loss are written with considerable skill.
This is a good book for any thoughtful reader, not only for Catholics, and a revealing encounter with important truths.

Bad Church Good Church A Memoir of a Former Catholic Priest Tom Kane 9781450708777 Books Reviews
This beautifully written, good humored and at times crotchity memoir, touches the heart deeply with personal stories that reflect deep human connection and the lonliness of the soul seeker's path. The author's easeful story telling style reflects their tremendous writing skill. It is one of those books that is a joy to read. Highly recommended.
I couldn't put this book down. I found it a revealing portrait of the life of a priest, very honestly told. Kane gives an insider's view of how the Church, by holding on to outmoded doctrines, causes tremendous pain for its adherents, and how a person truly concerned for the welfare of his parishioners cannot be a priest without being a hypocrite. I highly recommend this book.
Tom Kane's memoir about his childhood as a good Catholic boy, his ordination as a Catholic Priest and his subsequent spiritual struggle with the meaning and value of the Church he both loves and hates is an honest, poignant, and probing exploration of the "Good Church" that helps the poor and downtrodden versus the "Bad Church" caught in its own power and absolutism.
It is a deeply moving and sometimes witty memoir which provided me additional motivation to begin a memoir writing group in our local Senior Center. I want to thank him for this contribution to my own spiritual journey and my decision to continue writing and reading memoirs.
Mr. Kane did an incredible job of communicating his story in this book, I couldn't put it down until I was done! It goes into detail about growing up in the great depression and how those circumstances pushed him toward the church. The story details his experiences of becoming a priest and the circumstances and situations that eventually led to him leaving the church and finding a different structure for spirituality. As someone who has left the catholic church I found this book helped me to feel not so alone with my spiritual decisions... Truly a great story!
I ordered the book after I heard of Tom's self-imposed demise. Very well written, and I could not put it down. It told of his difficult childhood during the Depression, gave some idea of why he joined the priesthood, told of his disillusion with the priesthood and his choice to leave, related his descent into atheism, and then finally how he regained his spiritual self. It even hinted at the reason he may have chosen to end his life. Anyone raised in the Catholic religion, as I was, can relate to his story. A story that will haunt you.
In this extraordinary memoir, the author presents a very personal, honest, and sincere account of his life and his struggles with faith, love, and morality.
Tom Kane, a former Roman Catholic priest, left the priesthood and the church to pursue a path toward a more humanistic, less dogmatic spirituality. A primary reason for his split with Catholicism was the church's arrogant assertions regarding sexual matters. Mr. Kane discusses these matters as well as his own sexuality openly and courageously. Particularly moving is a chapter devoted to a woman who he loved very much, her death, and the effects of this loss.
Kane, refreshingly, holds nothing back as he offers his readers a very detailed and interesting narrative of his colorful and eventful life. As readers, we enjoy the privilage of being able to consider his most intimate thoughts, feelings, and aspirations.
This is a delightfully honest book, written in a richly rewarding, non-pretentious, lively style. Buy this book!
It will exceed your expectations!
