The Rampart Guards Chronicle One in the Adventures of Jason Lex Wendy Terrien Books
Are you bemused by Bigfoot, nuts about Nessie, and fascinated with faeries? Mystical and mysterious creatures have captured our imagination since humans first began to swap stories over campfires. The world of unexplained and unverified lifeforms now falls under its own fringe scientific category – cryptozoology. Debut author Wendy Terrien has her own ideas about this secret world and has turned them into an action-packed, magical mystery. When Jason Lex arrives home with his dad and siblings from his afterschool basketball game to find his mom missing, he isn’t sure what to think. Has she abandoned them or did something terrible happen to her? Night stretches into the next morning and the police arrive on their doorstep with her bloodied shirt in hand. While they never find a body, the conclusion based upon the amount of blood on the shirt is that she was attacked by a mountain lion and can’t possibly have survived.
The family mourns for several months before Jason’s dad finally decides it would be better for all of them to pack up and move several hours away to be near his mother’s family. As the moving van is pulling away from the house, Jason looks back at it one last time and he is convinced he sees his mom walk past a window. Everyone seems convinced Jason is simply consumed with grief.
The mystery continues to deepen when he meets his mom’s brother – an uncle he never knew existed. His uncle is known around town as a quirky oddball who wanders about gathering data for his research on mythical creatures as a self-proclaimed cryptozoologist. As he begins to build a relationship with his uncle, he learns about the secret role his mother’s family has played in maintaining balance between cryptids and the human world; his mother was a Rampart Guard.
Terrien has crafted a fun romp that is sure to please middle grade readers clamoring for a new series after devouring Rick Riordan, JK Rowling, and the 000 section of their elementary and middle school libraries.

The Rampart Guards Chronicle One in the Adventures of Jason Lex Wendy Terrien Books Reviews
Ask me to read a book where Mongolian Death Worms are real? Sign me up because I’m in. While there are, admittedly, less of the cryptids than I’d like in a book about the mythologies that go bump in the night being real, I had a good time reading The Rampart Guards by Wendy Terrien.
Definitely a book I would recommend to middle grade teachers or anyone with twelve to fourteen year olds in their house looking for something to read. It’s on the shorter side, has some interesting twists, and makes the reader (or, me, at least) think about gender, families, and who to trust when you don’t know who to trust.
I found a couple of things a bit off-putting there’s a few comments that made me wince a little—namely the quote about “men don’t lose it”. It didn’t destroy the reading experience, but it did take a moment out of me where I just stared at the line in slight dismay.
But, there’s a dog. And a girl who sort of hacks and does martial arts. And some less-than-expected villains. Which, I’m always excited for. I’m looking forward to more of those in the next book of the series.
If you enjoy middle grade and like family drama with some magic, go for it. It’s a good time.
I'm not much of a Sci-fi reader but I was encouraged to read this book and I'm so glad I did. Shortly after beginning the book I didn't want to put it down. A great plont, fantastic characters, and an exciting story.
This is a fun young reader, with a clever and original fantasy storyline. Finally, not yet another dystopian universe. Hard adult choices for the young protagonist. Looking forward to the next read in the series to go deeper into some of my favorite characters.
Great Book! Wendi is able to take us to another world! Creative and light reading. Keeps you wondering and wanting more.. Can't wait for the next book.
From its gut wrenching beginning to surprising ending, Wendy Terrien’s The Rampart Guards is packed with action, adventure, and unexpected twists to its very unique plot. After turning page after page to keep up with Jason Lex, his family, friends, and near invincible enemies, readers will definitely have to check out the series’ remaining books as well.
I know this is characterized as a YA genre, but from a person who hasn't been a young adult for a very long time, I found this book to be very engaging and I was completely hooked! This paranormal fantasy is full of a myriad of authentic and endearing characters and moves along at fast pace, with many creative plot lines. I love it when I don't know who "the bad guys" are because the author has built in such a nice twisty plot! I was thoroughly engaged and sad when I saw I had only a dozen pages left. The good news? There's a sequel! I'll be reading it for sure!
I bought this book on for my kindle because I was curious about the title and it had great reviews. I wasn't disappointed. It is a great book and I now own the hard back as well. If you like Stranger Things, you'll like this book. I can't wait for the next book in the series to come out.
