Francis de Sales, writing in the seventeenth century, was not imbued with the soirit of ecumenism of thetwentieth century. He was engaged in a struggle for the truth with Calvanists in Geneva, and does an admirable job of refuting the teaching of the reformers. I am grateful for the rediting of this work.
This kindle edition is good in that it has instant links to the chapters, but several of the chapters are titled incorrectly, and the book is actually missing a few chapters.
Fantastic theological/biblical defense of the Catholic Faith/Church against any other sect established!
I've only started reading it but I've found it great so far, his arguments are quite brilliant. It was a little hard to get into at first because of the old fashioned way of writing but once you get used to it it's fine. Would definitely recommend!
In this work St. Francis de Sales points out that the word "Catholic" means universal and that the true Church must be universal in time. Protestant sects are not universal in time, they did not exist until the 1500's. The Catholic Church is universal in time, it was founded by our Lord!
St. Francis de Sales also does a great job of defending the Catholic dogma of purgatory.
The Catholic Controversy is a great book but this is a terrible edition. Nearly every page has typographical errors which are distracting for the reader and an insult to St. Francis de Sales.
